Alternative to Hysterectomy

Mahaska Health Partnership OB/GYN Offers Alternative to Hysterectomy

Mahaska Health Partnership OB/GYN Specialist Dr. Jeffrey Fowler offers an alternative to hysterectomy for women experiencing abnormal menstrual cycles.

“If a woman is done having children and other, more serious medical conditions are ruled out, endometrial ablation is a wonderful alternative to hysterectomy,” Dr. Fowler said. “The procedure is minimally invasive and stops almost all uterine bleeding.”

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, endometrial ablation destroys a thin layer of the lining of the uterus and stops the menstrual flow in many women. It is usually performed when medications have not helped alleviate a heavy or abnormal menstrual cycle.

A menstrual cycle, in most women, occurs every 21 to 35 days and lasts two to seven days. “Women who have extreme cycles often have a diminished quality of life,” Dr. Fowler stressed. “It can be very painful, limit their daily activities and affect their ability to sleep.

“Many women think hysterectomy is the only way to alleviate their symptoms but endometrial ablation is a much simpler procedure and has no hormonal side effects. With ablation, the patient is usually in and out of the hospital in less than four hours and is able to return to normal activity within a day with little to no discomfort.”

Dr. Fowler suggested that any woman considering hysterectomy due to abnormal cycles consider this alternative treatment. “Any time you can do a less invasive medical treatment, that’s the way to go.”

OB/GYN Specialist Dr. Jeffrey Fowler is available fulltime on the MHP campus in Oskaloosa. For an appointment call 641.672.3360.
