Life Saving Surgery

Mary Vogt never imagined her life would take a turn for the worse on Sunday, February 6, 2011, but Dr. Breon and MHP’s Trauma Response Team acted quickly to ensure she survived her almost fatal diagnoses.

“It was Super Bowl Sunday and all I can recall is that I was in excruciating pain,” Mary said. “My stomach hurt so bad that I literally don’t remember a thing from that day.”

Mary was taken by her husband to MHP’s Emergency Department where they discovered that her stomach had ruptured causing severe internal bleeding and a dangerous drop in her blood pressure. Because MHP is a Level III Trauma Center, the Trauma Response Team was immediately paged, including Dr. Breon who performed emergency surgery to repair Mary’s stomach.

“My husband thought I wasn’t going to have a stomach anymore, but Dr. Breon repaired and cleaned the tissue so well,” Mary said. “Dr. Breon literally saved my life that day.”

After the surgery, she was transferred to Iowa Methodist Medical Center, now Unity Point Health, in Des Moines for continued care. Mary was in a coma for four weeks. When she awoke, her husband told her what had happened and how Dr. Breon and the Trauma Response Team at MHP had saved her life. Dr. Breon had even come to Des Moines the day after her emergency surgery to see how she was doing.

“I went back to visit Dr. Breon after I was discharged to tell him how grateful I was,” Mary said. “All of the staff that responded that day went above and beyond to help me. I thank God every day that they were there to help me.”

Recently, Mary returned to Dr. Breon for hernia surgery to repair the delicate stomach tissue that remained after her emergency surgery two years ago. “Again, Dr. Breon did a great job,” Mary explained. “All of the doctors and nurses at MHP work together to make sure I am the healthiest I can be.

“I strongly recommend Dr. Breon and his staff,” Mary said. “MHP has the best doctors around.”
