Lab Adds New Analyzer

MHP goes live with the cobas 6000 Chemistry Analyzer

Mahaska Health Partnership announced the completion of the installation of a new laboratory analyzer that provides the latest technology to respond to physician requests for blood tests.

This new system, called the cobas® 6000 analyzer series, analyzes blood samples for routine and innovative chemistry tests ordered by physicians. According to MHP Laboratory Director Jane Sayre, MT(AMT), CLT(HHS),BS, the new analyzer series will help make our lab much more efficient and will have a very positive impact on the level of care provided to patients.

“This system provides broad testing capability to continue to enhance our practice of laboratory medicine for years to come,” Sayre said. “Physicians and patients will see fast, reliable and accurate results and the laboratory will become more efficient and productive. This is just another step in our commitment to continuously improve our quality of patient care.”

According to Sayre, MHP decided to upgrade the laboratory as demand for more tests continued to grow.  The cobas 6000 analyzer series consolidates the testing previously performed by three other units in the laboratory. The analyzer consolidates more than 60% of routine testing, potentially helping the lab to operate with fewer analyzers and optimizing the efficiency of its staff.

“Currently, we average more than 1,300 test requests per day, and that demand is continuing to grow,” Sayre said. “Therefore, we found ourselves needing to accomplish more every day, and it was beginning to take a toll on our personnel resources. With increased demand, we knew we needed to make improvements in order to maintain our goal of producing fast and accurate test results.”

Manufactured by Roche Diagnostics, the cobas 6000 analyzer series integrates multiple technologies to give the hospital a means to improve efficiency and the flexibility to grow as its needs change. Upgrading the laboratory was a tremendous task; however, Sayre said the transition went very well.
