Home Telemonitoring Brings Peace of Mind

Oskaloosa resident Marie Hibler, 94, likes her independence and wants to stay healthy and out of the hospital. With Mahaska Health Partnership Home Health’s Home Telemonitoring System, she actively participants in monitoring her health.

 

After a hospital stay and a month in a nursing home to recover, Marie is now home. Her doctor, Family Practice Physician Randall Hart, suggested she look into MHP’s home telemonitoring system which walks her through collecting her vital signs for a daily check-up.

The simple steps that Marie is carefully directed through each day bring a sense of security and peace of mind to her, her family and her healthcare providers. “It’s very easy to use,” Marie said. “It’s like having a nurse right here with me. I feel safer and my children are very happy that I can benefit from this service.”

According to MHP Home Health Nurse Bev Gray, RN, the home telemonitoring device takes Marie’s daily weight, blood pressure, pulse and heart rate. The machines can also be programmed to ask a series of health questions that the client can answer by pressing a button.

 “The medical information measured is securely and confidentially transmitted over the phone line to the MHP Home Health office, where it is reviewed daily by a home health nurse,” Gray explained. “The system is an excellent management tool for patients with chronic illnesses and other conditions requiring more frequent, in-home medical attention. We are able to detect even small changes in a client’s health, allowing us to address problems early by contacting the client and, when appropriate, notifying the client’s physician.”

According Laurie Schelker, MHP Home Health Coordinator, the goal of home telemonitoring is to catch irregularities before they become problems.  “Home telemonitoring is a proactive approach to healthcare, allowing us to detect health problems before they escalate into a more serious condition that could result in an emergency department visit or a hospital stay,” she explained.

“We are able to detect even slight medical changes much earlier and address any issues before they escalate. It is an important medical tool for picking up on changes that occur suddenly or unexpectedly.”
