Certified Diabetes Educator

The National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) announced that Mahaska Health Partnership Diabetes Educator Sharon Ferguson achieved Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) status by successfully completing the Certification Examination for Diabetes Educators.

To be certified by the NCBDE, candidates must meet rigorous eligibility requirements to be able to take the Examination. Achieving certification status demonstrates to people with diabetes and employers that the healthcare professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge, thereby promoting quality of care for people with diabetes. Currently, Iowa has 246 practicing professionals with CDE certification.

Ferguson has been employed at MHP since 2008, and has been a nurse for more than 30 years. In 2010, she was one of 12 healthcare workers in the state to receive the distinguished “Hospital Hero Award” from the Iowa Hospital Association for her work with diabetes. She started a free monthly diabetes support group, organized a curriculum for a diabetes self management class called Diabetes WISE and gathered qualified healthcare professionals to volunteer their time to teach.

“We are very proud of Sharon’s accomplishments as MHP’s Diabetes Educator,” said MHP CEO Jay Christensen. “She has used her talents and expertise to improve our organization and the health and well being of our community. She is the embodiment of our great team players employed at MHP, who have commitment and passion that drives our growth and performance. Obtaining the CDE credential demonstrates not only her dedication to the diabetes specialty, but that Sharon has met a high level of competency in diabetes self-management education.

NCBDE was established in 1986 to develop and administer a certification program for healthcare professionals who teach individuals with diabetes how to manage their disease. Through the development, maintenance and protection of the certification process and the CDE credential, NCBDE recognizes and advances the specialty practice of diabetes education.
