Celebrating our Patients

Mahaska Health Partnership celebrated National Patient Recognition Day on Thursday, Feb. 3. Inpatients received a flower and card of thanks on their meal tray while outpatients and visitors were gifted MHP purple pens.

“We know our patients have a choice when it comes to their healthcare,” MHP Chief Nursing Officer Darlene Keuning said. “We are honored when they choose the quality care we offer close to home at MHP.”

MHP celebrates National Patient Recognition Day because it is a special time for providers and staff to renew their commitment to making healthcare personal for patients. “Everything we do is centered on providing exceptional customer service for our patients,” Keuning said. “In the past year, we have implemented many initiatives to ensure the safety of our patients and open communication between providers, staff and patients.”

In Inpatient Services, nurses now complete a bedside shift report. According to Keuning, this provides an opportunity to educate the nurse coming on duty about personal cares and preferences of each patient and allows patients to ask questions about their care. “Bedside shift report keeps patients involved and up-to-date regarding their care and treatment plans and has been very well received by patients,” Keuning said.

Barcode Medication Administration (BCMA) was also implemented to promote patient safety. When a nurse gives medicines to a patient at MHP, the nurse can scan the barcode on the patient’s wristband and make sure that the patient is the right person. The nurse can then scan the barcode on the medicine to verify if it is the right medicine at the right dose at the right time by the right route.

“We’ve also exceeded many of the nationally-set quality standards for patient care,” Keuning stressed. “We have core measures in pneumonia, heart failure, surgical care and hospital outpatients that we monitor utilizing ‘best practices’ to insure our patients are getting very good care. As a healthcare system, we set a goal of 95% and we continue to exceed it on a monthly basis.”

Keuning stressed, “As an organization, MHP has made a commitment to make healthcare personal for our patients and visitors and we strive to act on that promise during every interaction.”
